ETTA e-zine

Monday, September 29th, 2008

I have just discovered the English Table Tennis Association’s (almost monthly) on-line magazine, or e-zine. Looks pretty good and, in addition to news and events there is a blog we can comment on and a Table Tennis Tips section. For instance the current August edition has a section on serving, including the use of the long serve and serving to left and right-handers. The previous two editions, June and July, had tips on forehand backspin serving

The forehand service from the backhand side is the most commonly used in high-level table tennis

That’s us then! Other issues have articles on backhand serves and even one on how to glue new rubbers on your bat.

The e-zine is well worth a look and you can subscribe to it (it’s free!) to get an email notification when the next issue is published on line. One weakness at the moment is there is no archive to help get back to earlier issues easily (it started in December 2007). However, each edition has a prominent button to view the previous issue.

Thursday morning over 50s sessions have started

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Alan has now started the Thursday morning sessions at the Halifax Table tennis Centre. These are for 10.30 to 11.30. If you live in the general area and have the time and inclination why not come along and give it a go. It’s a friendly group and great fun as well as being a good way of getting a bit of exercise and staying fit. Beginners are welcome.

The pressure mounts!

We have just learnt that the first matches of the season will be in week commencing Monday 6th October. Our home evening will be Mondays so, if the first week is a home week for us, we may well be playing our first match on the 6th. In the meantime one of our players has not been able to play for a number of weeks now due to a serious shoulder problem. We hope he will be ok to play in due course but it will take a little time to get back into the swing of things. Robin, our social secretary, is currently organising a pre-season social and we are hoping our partners will come along to this and also support us at matches were possible. If nothing else it should give them some amusement!

New coaching tips section

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Every week we get advice and tips from Alan, perhaps too much for aged brains to absorb and remember! I thought it would be a good idea to keep notes of the main tips as we get them as a reminder. So a new section has been started on Coaching tips. This section may also be of interest to players that read this web site.
