Friday 29 May saw the majority of the team in the elegant surroundings of Villa McMullan at the 4th in a series of social events for the POPPS table tennis team since its formation in the autumn of 2008. Armed with various contributions of food and drink, the members arrived in a variety of garb to celebrate the end of the winter season and the start of the summer league. Alan’s golf-inspired sweater, sponsored by PING immediately drew the response of PONG from the smarter members there. You can’t beat a bit of original wit now and then, but preferably not all night. Gale brought a taste of the Indian sub-continent, while Derek came with an elegant and historical Oxfam creation. The rest the womenfolk oozed style, while the remainder of the men blended into the background with their understated sartorial flair.

The drinks were taken in the majestic garden in this exclusive area of Halifax and guests were able to relax in the warmth of a May evening. The massive food spread miraculously appeared, plates were filled to the brim and conversation ceased as the assembled throng sank their teeth into food which would not have disgraced a top restaurant.

Then the conversation resumed, mixing table tennis exploits and hard luck stories with life stories and family exploits. Then, as the evening slipped by and the darkness fell, the guests disappeared into the night, grateful for the hospitality of Peter & Pam and realising the need to get plenty of table tennis in during the following week to work off any excesses. Once again POPPS showed itself to be champions at socialising, whilst not yet reaching those heights on the green table.

We know that the summer league will be tough, but we approach it with confidence, knowing that some defeats will not slow down our learning curve.

Popps were well beaten by Old Town Hounds but Peter, playing at No.1 for Popps, saved our faces by winning 2 of his sets. It could have been closer with 2 other sets going to 5 games but the Hounds showed dogged determination and managed to sniff out a victory in both. We took the lead at the start with Peter winning the first set of the evening but we flattered to deceive and soon found we were in for a tough evening. Neither Terry or Mieszek managed to win a set for Popps but both looked the part from time to time and were not disgraced. Mieszek was suffering badly from a heavy cold (in fact technically not a cold but this is not a medical report) and played well in the circumstances. It was noticed that in between their sets the Hounds players consumed some sort of strange fluorescent string. We were on the point of checking this against the ETTA list of proscribed substances but it turned out to be liquorice boot laces. It cannot be certain this is what made the difference between to the 2 teams but Popps, always willing to learn from better teams, will be paying more attention to their dietary preparations in future. We have a lot to learn about table tennis nutrition and perhaps this is an area we can improve on. As an experiment we are thinking of Baileys and vegetarian samosas for a between sets boost. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Like the English rugby, football and cricket teams, Popps are becoming expert in finding positives from defeats. This is a well honoured tradition dating back to Dunkirk of course. We all agree that we are doing pretty well given out lack of experience and that we play as well as many of our opponents some of the time at least. What we need is more consistency and then some of our narrow defeats in games and sets will become victories. My personal response to this has been to moderate my game a little and be rather more conservative and circumspect. I can’t say this has made that much difference yet and I wonder if this is the right approach. One thing I am sure of. A major part of the problem is lack of technique. I am tempted to let up on attacking shots because, although some come off very well and win points, many (most?) just go off the end of the table or just clip the the net (occassionally they land on an adjacent table!). Sometimes a shot is missed because it wasn’t really on. But if it is on I can’t see any advantage in not going for it. Of course, you need to make the right judgement about what is on and what isn’t and that comes with experience and being realistic about your abilities. I’m not sure my attacking shots will improve by not playing them when I should be and I feel this is what I am beginning to do. So, my New Year resolution for the second half is to improve shot selection, go for an attacking shot whenever it is the right shot to go for and don’t pull back or be hesitant, and improve consitency by improving technique rather than holding back when the chances appear.

The last post here was about our defeat in the first round of the Halifax Table Tennis League handicap tournament. Coincidently, a week too late, a new post on Greg Lett’s table tennis web site offers some good advice and tips on how to play doubles. There is a possibility that a consolation tournament will be run for 1st round losers so this might still prove useful for us. However, I don’t relish being knocked out in the first round of a consolation event. Perhaps there will be a consolation consolation event too! Greg’s artcle is at: http://tabletennis.about.com/od/matchplayadvice/a/doublestips.htm?nl=1

Table Tennis Things I know…. is an interesting post by Greg Letts on the excellent tabletennis.about.com web site. Greg feels he would be a very much better player today if a number of now seemingly obvious things had dawned on him earlier in his career. Most of us in the POPPs team are returning to table tennis after longish breaks, in my case over 30 years, and are keen to make up for lost time. Some of Gregg’s tips are especially relevant for us, but not all. His advice to ‘start young’ is not too useful, to us at least!! The rest of his 10 tips however are worth serious consideration. In particular I found his observations on the importance of serving and returning serves very useful and reinforces my one observations and experience so far. Rather than complain about the low cunning of some opponents’ serves learn to give as good as you get! Look for opportunities to play better players is another tip but of course that is exactly why we have joined the league – not with any expectation we will have immediate success, or very much at all to begin with, but because it is a sure fire way of playing against better players and improving.

The section on planning your training may be a little more controversial as he makes it clear that, in his opinion, it is not worth spending much time practicing strokes you are not going to use in a match. But surely you don’t play those strokes in matches because they are poor or you lack confidence in them and not practising them just means, obviously, they will not improve and you will never be able to play anything but your preferred game, win or lose. However, on thinking about this a little more I think it depends on what it is you want to achieve and why you are playing in the first place. There is no doubt that even our fairly restricted repertoire of strokes could be much improved and a great deal of progress can still be made just developing what we already have. As Gregg says, “you have more potential than you think” and I’m sure this is true of all of us. It just depends how far you want to develop that potential. Personally I want to get as good as I can get within the constraints of my time, other commitments and boredom threshold if I play too much. I’m aiming for about twice a week on average. I would prefer an all round game where I can vary the style of play, tactics and shots, if possible but this will depend on good coaching, another of Greg’s tips. We are very fortunate we have this already thanks to Alan.
