Well done POPPs A. The POPPs teams have won all 3 of their first matches of the season so collectively we are all off to a great start. This victory of BT is especially good as they finished 4th in Division 2 last year and POPPs A are the new boys promoted from Division 3 last year.

Thanks for the report Derek. This was the B team's first match of the season up against the team that we just managed to finish above last year and so avoided coming bottom. This is the start we needed for what is likely to be another tough year. I suspect we and the OT Robins will be pretty close again at the end.

A great victory at last for Popps B: having been a guest player in their early season against the same team, it was good to see a back to back triumph for the B's. Not surprisingly, over the season, the highlight has been the consistent improvement in Joan's game: her focus & concentration on each shot should be a lesson to us all - except perhaps Terry A. who seems to live on another planet during matches! Well done, team B & keep working on every shot.

Congratulations Team! I'm sorry I couldn't be there to share in this rare moment! It's great that at last all of you have converted close sets into victories. This should put us back on target not to finish bottom!

I'd like to say how well everyone played on the night. The A team kept to their normal high standard which created quite a formidable challenge to the B team players. I thought Joan and Robin in particular played extremely well, in fact better than I have ever witnessed before! Some of the rallies to the casual viewer could have been from a match a division higher. Robin won one rally with 3 consecutive forehand smashes followed by back hand smash winner! And a couple of Derek's back hand winners where from the top draw. The result was never in doubt but enough of the games were close enough to keep everyone interested and, as Derek says, give the B team encouragment for the future.

Thanks for the report Terry. Sound like a worthwhile experience. Could you explain a little about how the mystery doubles works, for instance how they arrange the pairings? Perhaps this is something we could do on one of our practice mornings? It woudl be particularly good before the sealed handicap doubles as it woudl give us soem much needed doubles practice under something like match conditions.

Robin then packed his bags and went away
With poetry like this for many a day (we hope!)
With his scathing wit and his long trombone
No wonder he is left forlorn (and alone)
The writs will be out, he'll be sued to the hills
When he returns he'll receive all the bills.

A great start for the A team. I think Peter in particular should be congratulated for an excellent start so soon after coming back from serious injury.

I was watching some of this match while playing in the B team match on an adjacent table. From what I saw I'm surprised that the score was 8 - 1 to Suma. It looked like a much closer match than this. Some of the B team games were not much longer than some of the A team rallies! Certainly we were packing up to go home long before your match was finished.
