Thanks for this report Alan. Sound like you had a good match and all aquitted yourselves well considering that the Citizens are one of the top teams in the division and the most experienced. I’m sure us youngsters we can learn a lot from them! Incidently, a match is made up of 9 sets, each the best of 5 games. At least I think this is the correct terminology. No doubt someone will correct us if not!

It was indeed a very close match. Sowerby 3 needed an average of just 1 more point per game to clinch it. I must say when their handicap was raised from the 117 intially set by mistake to 198 I thought we would find victory beyond us. I have no idea how the handicaps are calculated, probably a formula that includes the current FTSE 100 index, the preceeding weeks’ average temperature and rainfall and a measure from 1 to 10 of how much the handicapper fancies each team captain’s mother, dead or alive. Anyway, whatever it is, it works pretty well.

Excellent report. Words sometimes help in raising moral during defeat and the humour of the author must be an excellent boost to the team!! Persil white shirts are not illegal… if an orange ball is being used! Pedantic, I know!

Yes, we lost 2 – 7. This is of course a better result than I recorded in the report. Well done us! Terminology: A match is between 2 teams of 3 players and everyone plays everyone else (on the opposing team of course). A match is therefore made up of 9 sets and each set consists of the best of 5 games. I think this is correct but we can check with John or Alan. If Alan is their main coach I shall ask him for pushing lessons to supplement the smashing everything in sight and missing the table lessons I am getting at the moment.

As there were only 9 matches,the score of 2-8 is an interesting one. Perhaps it reflects an extra match played by our reporter in his mind as he struggled to force some oxygen into his exhausted frame.
I think we need some clarification on terminology re: sets, games and matches. I thought a game was the best of 5 sets. Is a game the same as a match? can you a light a fire by striking one? Clearly we need some help here as we do with our tt.

You’re not doing yourself justice David, as second highest POPPs scorer of the evening. Not bad considering you were playing at No. 3. It was your fantastic 18 point game that got the team within 2 points of victory. Over the competition the team has done extremely well to get this far. There is always next year but, after this performance, we are unlikely to get so big a handicap. As has been said before, most of our team players are inexperienced and not used to competitive play. I hope this doesn’t come back to haunt me in the future but I think we have a lot of improvement still to come, proabably more so than most of the teams we have played against in our first season. Well done to everyone.
